The American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (AAOMS) sponsors the annual Dental Implant Conference each December in Chicago. The attendees of the 2006 Dental Implant Conference participated in timely, thoughtful, and honest continuing education presentations, encompassing the broad scope of patient oral rehabilitation with dental implants.

The Board of Trustees and the Committee on Continuing Education and Professional Development of AAOMS have invited several of the speakers from the 2006 conference to publish a refereed manuscript on the topic that they presented.

This supplement to the Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery features works by these presenters. These papers outline the innovative keys for establishing a predictable esthetic result. The subtle nature of the facial bone profile to movement of the facial gingival margin, when and when not to use minimal surgical flaps for implant placement, research on preservation of crestal bone, and the use of orthodontic therapy to enhance the outcome of rehabilitation of patients with missing teeth are some of the new concepts presented in this special JOMS dental implant issue. A step-by-step description of the use of computed tomography imaging to guide implant placement is presented in this supplement, in order to allow the reader to incorporate a comprehensive detailed approach to patient management. Such detail is usually not found in the peer-reviewed literature.

Multiple implant restorations require thoughtful planning, which is described in this supplement. Complications are often avoidable and the most common reasons for having complications are also presented.

This is an exciting JOMS supplement of practical value to the practicing oral and maxillofacial surgeon. This issue contains state-of-the-art messages for clinicians of all levels of experience. Enjoy.
