Segmentalization of the maxilla affords the surgeon tremendous opportunities to correct three-dimensional discrepancies of the maxillomandibular skeleton. Various segmentalization schemes are available, including midline segmentalization creating a two-piece maxilla, segmentalization distal to the canines allowing for three-piece segmentalization and lastly three-piece segmentalization by utilizing a segmentation distal to the lateral incisor.

Segmentation between the lateral incisor and canine provides far more flexibility in solving three-dimensional maxillary problems. The surgeon can address transverse discrepancy in the posterior segments, cross arch vertical discrepancies. Furthermore there is far greater control of the vertical and horizontal aspects of the four tooth incisor segment.

Therefore the lateral-canine segmentalization scheme provides the greatest flexibility for a positive esthetic outcome by having direct control over the three dimensional aspects of the maxillary dental units

This presentation will highlight these concepts.
