Third Research Summit Scheduled for May
AAOMS, the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Foundation, and the International Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons will host an OMS research summit May 7-8, 2009, in Rosemont, IL. This will be the third such summit since 2005.
The program will include presentations on the latest investigative findings in such areas as salivary biomarkers, mechanisms and advanced imaging in craniofacial neuropathic pain, simulation technology, tissue engineering, and developmental biology and stem cells.
Lunch and learn sessions and a poster session are scheduled for each day. The afternoon of May 8 is devoted to breakout sessions that will focus on the development of research areas of interest to the oral and maxillofacial community and hopefully translate into future funding support and enhanced OMS patient care and practice.
Young Investigators Day Precedes Summit
The summit is immediately preceded by a Young Investigators Day workshop on Wednesday, May 6, to provide oral and maxillofacial surgeons and OMS residents with mentoring and networking opportunities.
The workshop will provide attendees from all academic levels with critical information about the culture, metrics, and demands of a professional career in academic oral and maxillofacial surgery, as well as contact with successful role models and mentors. Several joint sessions and an evening reception will give participants an opportunity to interact and network with academic oral and maxillofacial surgeons.
Workshop topics include finding meaning and fulfillment in an academic career, barriers to career development, applying for basic and clinical research grants, and practical strategies for meeting the competing demands of academia.
9th Annual Day on the Hill
With a new president and Congress at the helm in Washington, advocating on behalf of the specialty is critical. The new administration and top legislators have pledged to make health care reform a top priority in 2009, and any decisions made at the federal level are likely to affect individual OMSs and their practices. Therefore, it is vital that we make our voices heard at this historic time.
Scheduled for Wednesday, April 29, 2009, in Washington, DC, the 2009 AAOMS Day on the Hill program provides a unique opportunity for AAOMS members to educate federal officials about oral and maxillofacial surgery and promote our legislative priorities.
The activities will kick off on the evening of Tuesday, April 28, with a cocktail reception and dinner featuring notable political commentator, Charlie Cook, as the keynote speaker. On Wednesday morning there will be a short program where members of Congress will provide an insider's perspective on federal health care activity, followed by the Capitol Hill visits.

Check Your Passport: 2009 Annual Meeting is in Toronto
OMSs from the United States who attend the annual meeting this year will need a passport to get in and out of Toronto (technically you do not need a passport to get into Canada but you do need a passport to get back in the US). Please check the expiration date on your passport to make sure it will be valid when traveling later this year.
If you do not have a passport, begin the application process as soon as possible so you will have it in sufficient time to travel. The current processing time is 3-4 weeks and the fee is $100 ($75 if applying by mail). Visit the US State Department Web site: http://travel.state.gov/passport/get/fees/fees_837.html.

1947-2009
Gerald E. Hanson of Las Vegas, NV, and Clarks Fork, ID, left this world behind to claim his greater reward after a courageous battle against malignant melanoma. Following his childhood in Minnesota, and a short detour to serve Uncle Sam in Washington, DC, in the late 60s, Gerry found his calling in dentistry and ultimately, in oral and maxillofacial surgery. His practice on Jones Boulevard in Las Vegas grew to be one of the most successful in the Western states, not only because of his fine surgical skills, but because of his uncompromising standards of excellence and compassionate care of his patients. Gerry loved his chosen career path and was determined to give back what it had given him. He spent countless hours in selfless service to organized dentistry and oral/maxillofacial surgery—serving as president of the Clark County Dental Society (1982-83), president of the Nevada State Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (1983-85), president of the Nevada Dental Association (1987), secretary-treasurer of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (1988-91), and president of the Western Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (1995-96). He served his adopted home state on the Nevada State Board of Health from 1990 to 1995, and acted as chief of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Sunrise Hospital (1984-94) and Sunrise Mountain View Hospital (1995-2001). His final and most enduring tenure was on the Board of the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Foundation, where as Chairman from 2005 to 2007, he created and spearheaded an innovative annual giving campaign that brought unheralded success in funding research for the specialty.
As impressive as Gerry's professional accomplishments were, they were only a small part of the man. He acquired a love of aviation at an early age and became a talented pilot. His superb restoration of antique and classic airplanes was legend and the list of awards too numerous to mention. He often said that flying was less expensive than hours on a psychiatrist's couch, and his perspective on this earthly life was most easily restored by looking down from the heavens. Gerry was an accomplished singer with an incredible voice that graced numerous church choirs and, on occasion, a fortunate karaoke bar. His appetite for reading and learning was endless—he was a student of history, of aviation, and of religion. His studies brought him into the fold of Christianity in his later years; a source of strength and comfort during the trials of his illness.
Because of his great character, Gerry garnered friends from all aspects of his extraordinary life. He was a cherished and loyal son, brother, nephew, cousin, friend, and mentor to countless individuals who had the privilege of being touched by this exemplary human being. He will be forever missed.
He is survived by his father Gerald S. Hanson of Lincoln, NE, and his sister Cleora Bently of Mankato, MN, as well as numerous extended family members. Services are pending. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Foundation (www.omsfoundation.org) or to the Loma Linda University School of Dentistry (www.llu.edu/llu/dentistry).
