OMSF Meets and Exceeds the AAOMS Challenge
2009 has been a special year for the OMS Foundation. It commemorates 50 years of service to the oral and maxillofacial surgery community; 50 years of uninterrupted support of the research that allowed the specialty to enlarge its scope of practice and offer patients state-of-the-art care in the OMS office. At the AAOMS Annual Meeting Awards Ceremony, OMSF Chair Dr David E. Frost reported that since its inception, “We have given more than $9.1 million back to the specialty in research awards, fellowships, and specialty-related projects. That's something to be proud of!”
As it turned out, there was even more to be proud of. Last year, at the 90th AAOMS Annual Meeting, the AAOMS Board contributed $200,000 to the OMSF corpus with a proviso that an additional $200,000 would be provided if the Foundation received at least $600,000 in donations by the 2009 Annual Meeting. The Foundation accepted the challenge with enthusiasm, and by the time the roll call was taken at the first session of the 2009 House of Delegates, contributions to the Foundation's REAP annual giving campaign exceeded the $600,000 goal.
“We raised more than $1.1 million for REAP,” Dr Frost announced during the second session of the House of Delegates. “Including the gifts from AAOMS, more than $1.3 million was raised to support research and education in our specialty.”
As he presented the second $200,000 check to Dr Frost, AAOMS President Dr R. Lynn White expressed the association's appreciation for the Foundation's achievement, noting, “At the time we issued this challenge, we were confident the OMSF would meet the goal. That you exceeded $600,000 is extraordinary and speaks to our membership's commitment and unwavering belief in the value of research to the future of our specialty.”

AAOMS Members—Promote your Practice Web Site on aaoms.org
Did you know that almost 1,400 patients visit the AAOMS Web site every weekday? The vast majority of them are looking for an OMS in their area in the site's “Find a Surgeon” database, which provides address and phone numbers, a map to the practice office and, for those fellows and members who have signed the AAOMS Link Participation Agreement, a link to the practice Web site. Statistics show that, more often, potential patients research treatments and procedures and select their dental and medical health care professionals on the basis of information presented on the practice Web site. Do not let this practice marketing opportunity pass you by. More than 500 of your AAOMS colleagues have added their Web site's address to the “Find a Surgeon” database. Just go to the Link Participation Agreement at www.aaoms.org/findoms_agreement.php and agree to provide a reciprocal link from your site to aaoms.org. Post your URL today.
